The Keys to Enjoying Mulberries

The keys to ENJOYING mulberries from your back yard tree are as follows.

DON'T get hung up on -
  1. Inspecting every berry before you put it in your mouth.
This is counter-productive. It slows down the thrill of gobbling. And you are bound to find some * teeny weeny tiny * bugs on one at some point and that will make you think twice, and ruin the whole thing.  The bugs won't hurt you if you eat them.
  2. Pulling out the little green stem before putting it in your mouth.
Eat the stem for godsakes. If you try to pull it out, you will find yourself with dark, staining, purple mulberry juice all over your fingers.  It will stay there for days, if not weeks.
  3. Trying to catch the big fat juicy ones that fall off while you're trying to pick the other big fat juicy ones.
Don't be greedy.  They will fall.  That's more for the deer, who can't reach as high as you can.

DO -

  1. Only eat the dark, black ones.
This may sound obvious, but some of us are so suburbanized that we may not actually know these things.
  2. Bend the branch low and bite the berry right off the branch if you can.
Watch out for the others that may fall into your eyes or onto your head, but that is part of the fun.
  3. Wear dark pants or shirt that you don't mind getting dirty.
This is for wiping your hands on when you get the inevitable berry juice on your fingers.
  4. Wear your berry juice stains with honor.
Not everyone has the opportunity to partake of such delights.
  5. Savor the sweetness in your mouth and thank Mother Nature for the treat.

NOTE:  If you have any trouble, bring along a child, I'd say under the age of 6 or 7.  They are typically VERY good at this

Wonderful, wonderful. Your description was almost as delightful as an actual mouthful. Almost.

Ah, this reminds me of bike rides with Marty in the baby seat on back, stopping along the Charles River on Storrow Drive to eat blackberries (mulberries?) growing wild on that one tree almost hidden on the path. Yum! if you pick the berries with the stem on you can pop them in your mouth and pull the stem off with your teeth. No stains and no eating stems!

I have tried this. Perhaps we are speaking of different berries (mulberry and blackberry) but this technique did not work for me. It was futile.

And, in the attempt I felt like that cartoon character in the commercial that asks, "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?" One lick, two licks, BITE!! Answer: "Two."

By the time my teeth and tongue messed around with that damn stem, I was already biting down on the juicy center of that berry!

    Hi Carrie,
Your piece reminded me of a Mulberry tree we had in our backyard. We had so many berries falling off all season that I considered it a nuisance rather than a blessing. If I'd read your instructions for enjoying mulberries back then, I probably would have had a different perspective! Thanks for the memory!
